Dilithium manganese(II) orthosilicate, Li2MnSiO4, is currently investigated as an alternative cathode material in lithium ion batteries. The redetermination of the crystal structure of the low-temperature polymorph based on single-crystal X-ray data revealed a perfectly site-ordered model for the Li and Mn sites, consistent with recent solid-state NMR studies. The structural set-up can be derived from a distorted hexagonal close-packed arrangement of O atoms with half of the tetrahedral voids occupied by the three types of cations.
