Dear IUCr Newsletter,

In support of Alan MacKay's "Global Family" article on page 10 of the Newsletter (Vol. 3, #1) I would like to relate my own story. I met Dr John Squire at a Fiber Diffraction workshop and continued correspondence with him through the next year. When my youngest sister began an exchange program at his University (Imperial College, London, UK), I gave her his card in case of emergency. I, and my parents, felt relieved that someone was there to look out for her. This just goes to show that we are a global family; ready to help in small ways to us, but in big ways to others.
