The European Crystallographic Association

On Monday August 25, 1997 the European Crystallographic Association was inaugurated at a meeting chaired by Hartmut Fuess in Lisbon, Portugal. The objectives of the Association are to contribute to the advancement of all aspects of crystallography and related topics concerning the non-crystalline states, and to promote European cooperation in crystallography. For these purposes the Association shall have the power (a) to adhere to the IUCr as a "Regional Associate", (b) to organize meetings and conferences on subjects falling within the purview of the Association, (c) to set up special purpose commissions, (d) to initiate, promote and coordinate crystallographic research requiring European cooperation, (e) to organise special projects which shall be financed independently of the regular operations of the Association, (f) to participate in joint commissions with other associations or other scientific bodies in matters of interest to the Association, (g) to do all such things as are appropriate for fulfilling its purposes. The first Executive Committee was elected as follows: President, Carmelo Giacovazzo; Vice-President, Joel Bernstein; Secretary, Paul T. Beurskens; Treasurer, Sybolt Harkema; Additional Members: Frank H. Allen, Marie Armenia Carrondo and Peter Paufler.
