Pure and profitable?

In a review of "Pasteur's Quadrant: Basic Science and Technological Innovation" by Donald E. Stokes, W. Lepkowski comments that Pasteur's life demonstrated how rich, rewarding research can be done in a world not divided into basic and applied interests, a world that simply needs to have problems solved. Lepkowski urges scientists to seek ways of connecting the work they do with solutions to social and economic problems.
