The conference on "Digital Image Recovery and Synthesis" was part of the "SPIEInternational Symposium on Optics, Imaging, and Instrumentation," held in San Diego, July 12-13, 1993. A session on "Crystallographic Image Recovery" organized by R. Millane drew papers in which computational methods are used to synthesize images from a variety of different kinds of data. Application areas that were covered included astronomical imaging, wavefront sensing, phase retrieval, imaging through turbulence, laser interferometry, and crystallography.

L. Ten Eyck (UCSD) gave a survey of structure determination techniques, and concentrated on maximum entropy methods, P. Doerschuk (Purdue) described image reconstruction based on Bayesian methods and Markov random fields. G. Sande (Sande and Assoc.) presented analysis using a Gauss-Newton minimizer to study convergence properties of phase retrieval. K. Zhang (UCLA) described histogram matching in the SQUASH system for phase refinement and extension. R. Millane described problems encountered with cylindrically averaged diffraction data in fiber diffraction.
