School of Crystal Growth, Poland

An International Summer School on Growth and Characterization of Crystals, held in September 1994 in Krynica, Poland, was organized jointly by the Jagiellonian University, Cracow, and the Technical University of Lublin, on behalf of the Polish Society for Crystal Growth and was sponsored by the Commission on Growth and Characterization of Materials (CGCM) of the IUCr and by the Polish Ministry of Education.

The 41 lectures, delivered by 18 experts from 11 countries covered fundamentals of nucleation and crystal growth, techniques of growth of bulk single crystals, epitaxy, morphology of crystals, applied aspects of growth processes in industry and nature, and characterization of crystals for a broad spectrum of materials including inorganic and organic semiconducting materials. The 29 participants were invited to present the latest results of their work as oral presentations. Two of them concerned the nomenclature of edge and screw dislocations, and the physical meaning of three-dimensional nucleation.

Krynica, one of the most famous health resorts in Poland, has several sanatoria and physiotherapy spas. School participants were invited to ride down the Dunajec river taking the waters, visit the apitherapy centre, and attend a concert by a famous Polish Folk Ensemble. The school's success was due to the Organizing Committee, S. Hodorowicz (Cracow) and K. Sangwal (Lublin), and the Programme Committee, H. Klapper (Bonn), Chairman of the CGCM and K. Sangwal (Lublin).
