Honoring McMullan

The Pittsburgh Diffraction Conference, November 3-5, 1994, was an outstanding meeting honoring Richard K. McMullan on the occasion of his retirement from Brookhaven National Laboratory. His modesty, patience, enthusiasm and dedication to the highest scientific standards are well known to those who have had the benefit of his friendship and collaboration. Throughout the conference, Dick put up with gentle teasing about his brutally long hours, his frugal lifestyle, his pecan farm, his tie, and his pipe.

The Sidhu Award was presented to J. Wang, Exxon, for his application of X-ray standing waves to the study of biologically relevant thin film systems, and A. Vrielink, McGill U., for her study of the crystal structure of cholesterol oxidase and the mechanism of FAD-dependent alcohol oxidation.

The Chung Soo Yoo Poster Award went to A. Cheng, Ohio State U., for "Chain Melting Phase Transition Kinetics and Mechanism in Model Membranes Monitored by Time-Resolved X-ray Diffraction".

The meeting covered the topics of hydration and hydrogen bonding, and the structure and function of organic, organometallic, inorganic and mineral structures and macromolecular structures. A detailed report of highlights of the scientific session appeared in the Winter 1994 issue of the ACA Newsletter.
