5th All-Texas Protein Crystallography

Crystallographers from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Mexico met at the 5th annual All-Texas Protein Crystallographic Symposium in College Station, Texas in November 1994. F. Quiocho (Hughes Institute, Baylor College of Medicine-HIBCM) presented results on capturing reaction intermediates in adenosine deaminase, the aldose reductase structure and low-barrier H-bonds. R. Swanson (Texas A&M) discussed allosteric control at a hydrophobic interface in ATCase.

Other structures described included amino acid decarboxylates, chitosanase, and chitinase (M. Hackert and E. Marcotte, UT, Austin), matrix metalloproteinase, Ht-d (L. Scapozza and I. Botos, Texas A&M), a 3 Å resolution electronic diffraction study of streptavidin monolayer crystals and fitting the G-actin X-ray structure (A. Avila-Sakar and A. McGough, HIBCM), the C2 domain of rat synaptotagmin (B. Sutton, HIBCM), E. coli photolyase at 2.3 Å resolution (H. W. Park, HIBCM), groES co-chaperonin at 2.8 Å resolution and aspartic proteinases (S. Foundling, Oklahoma Medical Foundation). B. Kobe described an RNAse + RNA inhibitor complex and discussed leucine-rich repeats in ligand binding and M. Ouillin (Phillips group, Rice) discussed ligand binding to myoglobin and its mutants.

Acknowledging the welcome participation of crystallographers from outside Texas, the symposium will henceforth be known as the South West Macromolecular Symposium.
