19th International Conference on Crystal Growth and Epitaxy
The American Association for Crystal Growth (AACG) would like to thank the IUCr for its support of the 19th International Conference on Crystal Growth and Epitaxy (ICCGE-19). The conference was held from 28 July to 2 August 2019 in beautiful Keystone, CO, USA, under the auspices of the International Organization for Crystal Growth (IOCG) jointly with the 19th US Biennial Workshop on Organometallic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (OMVPE-19) and, as is traditional, was preceded by the 17th International Summer School on Crystal Growth (ISSCG-17), held at the YMCA of the Rockies in nearby Granby, CO.
ICCGE-19 was the latest in a sequence that started with ICCG-1 in Boston, MA, USA, in 1966, which marked the formation of the crystal growth community as an independent discipline. The key principle of the IOCG and the ICCGE conferences is that the theory and practice of crystal growth are common across a range of materials and applications and that we have much to share with one another. The year 2019 also marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of the American Association for Crystal Growth.
The OMVPE-19 workshop continued a tradition, started at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA, in 1983, of bringing together specialists in the OMVPE field from industry, academia and government laboratories. The informal atmosphere and scenic surroundings of the workshop provided a venue for the presentation of new results and for newcomers to the field to familiarize themselves with OMVPE science and technology.
Overall there were 639 attendees from 31 countries, including 50% from the US, 20% from Europe, 19% from Japan and 4.5% from China.
A total of five IUCr Young Scientist subsistence and travel awards were made to graduate students. The recipients and the presentations they gave were as follows:
- Scott Dossa (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA) “Modeling the Optical Floating Zone Crystal Growth System for Materials Discovery” (Invited)
- Michael Liao (UCLA, USA) “Surface Evolution of Single Crystalline β-Ga2O3 with Chemical Mechanical Polishing and Annealing at an Elevated Temperature”
- Grace Pan (Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA) “Effective Dimensionality-Tuned Electronic States in Metastable Nickel Oxide Thin Films”
- John Roerig (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA) “Evaluation of an Inverted Vertical Gradient Freeze Method for Cadmium Zinc Telluride”
- Xiaotian Zhang (Penn State, PA, USA) “Epitaxial Growth of Layered β-In2Se3 Thin Films Via Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition”
The IUCr also gave awards to two student poster presenters:
- Smail Amari (CEA LITEN LCO, Grenoble, France), “Crystal Growth and Characterization of CH3NH3PbBr3 Single-Crystals for X-Ray Photodetection”
- Muad Saleh (Washington State University, Pullman, WA, USA) “Electrical and Optical Properties of Zr Doped β-Ga2O3 Single Crystals Grown by Czochralski Method”
ICCGE/OMVPE-19 provided sessions for presentation and discussion of recent advances in research and development over all aspects of crystal growth, epitaxy, characterization and applications. A total of 473 oral presentations and 75 poster presentations were delivered. The conference was an excellent opportunity to advance the science and technology of crystal growth, epitaxy, characterization and applications, as well as to convene with old and new friends, colleagues and business associates.

- Anton Jesche (Center for Electronic Correlations and Magnetism, Institut für Physik, Universität Augsburg, Germany) “The Metal Flux as a Powerful Tool for the Solid State Physicist” (IOCG Schieber Prize talk).
- Kei May Lau (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) “Advantages and Challenges of Growing III-V Photonic and Electronic Devices on Si”

Once again, we would like to express our appreciation for the IUCr’s support. There is great synergy between our communities, and crystallographers were well represented. Hanna is the new IOCG Vice President and Andrea will be the co-chair of ICCGE-20 in Naples, Italy, in 2022.
