Windows for Cryostat Chambers

X-ray transparent windows made from carbon-based materials for use as X-ray cryostat chambers, sample holders, furnaces, in EXAFS cells, and other applications requiring high X-ray transparency and low extraneous scattering. The materials are easy to handle, easily modified, and, unlike beryllium, are non-toxic. The scattering of the windowing materials is more diffuse than that of beryllium, and therefore easier to remove by collimation or to correct for by background subtraction.

Cryostat chambers are available in both cylindrical and hemispherical shapes for a wide variety of cryostats. In a special design modification a light-transparent lens can be used as the roof of the chamber, thus allowing simultaneous laser-light irradiation and X-ray diffraction of a sample maintained at very low temperatures.
