European Crystallographic Committee Meeting Report

(Abridged)

  • A letter proposing the formation of a European Crystallographic Association had been received from the Portuguese Crystallographers. The matter is under review.
  • The memberships in the European Crystallographic Committee (ECC) of the USSR and Yugoslavia were cancelled. Latvia, Croatia, Slovenia, Ukraine, and Russia were admitted as members of the ECC. T. Malinowsky stated that Moldova's application for membership is in preparation. H. Maendar reported that steps are being taken to form a National Committee in Estonia.
  • Report on ECM 15 (Dresden 1994): Aug. 28 to Sept. 2, 1994. The change in venue from Leipzig to Dresden was accepted unanimously. The first circulars are in distribution. The conference will take place at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Dresden. Student dormitories should be available at 50.-DM. and 80.-DM. The registration fee should be 300.-DM and there will be one satellite meeting on X-ray Topography in East Berlin organized by H. Klapper and H. Berger.
  • Report on ECM 16 (Lund, August 1995): The Organizing Committee will be chaired by A. Oskarsson and the Program Committee by J. Albertsson. The Program Committee is anxious to attract crystallographers in the areas of protein crystallography, electron microscopy, solid state chemistry, and powder diffraction.
  • Offers to host future ECM meetings (1997 or later) were received from Egypt, Portugal, and Czechoslovakia.
  • 18th IUCr Congress 1999: The National Committees of Israel and the United Kingdom plan to bid to host the 1999 IUCr Congress and General Assembly in Jerusalem or Glasgow, respectively.
  • The chairman reminded the delegates that there will be elections for the posts of Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and Secretary for the triennium 1993-1996 during the next ECC meeting to be held in Beijing in 1993. Recommendations for nominations to these posts were solicited.
  • Possible membership of Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan in the ECC and of the Asian republics of the Former Soviet Union (FSU) in the ECC and the Asian Crystallographic Association was discussed.
