Support for Conferences and Young Scientists

Since the early 1980's, the IUCr supported a number of international conferences on crystallographic and related subjects. The funds provided are earmarked for young-scientist travel and/or for organizational purposes. The program has been very popular in the past few years even though the support never covers a major part of the conference budget. Support for travel and attendance of young scientists through the IUCr Young Scientist Awards is a most important component of the program. A large part of the funds (generally in excess of 50%, frequently 100%) is restricted for this purpose.

Conference organizers can apply for support to the IUCr Calendar Subcommittee using a standard form, available from the Subcommittee Chairman. The exceptions are meetings which are satellites to IUCr Congresses for which applications are to be made through the Congress Chairman. The application deadline is nine months before the beginning of a meeting. In order for a meeting to qualify for support, scientists of all nationalities must be able to attend, in accordance with the ICSU rules for the free circulation of scientists. After receipt of the application by the Chairman of the Calender Subcommittee, it is sent to the Subcommittee members for comments, and then forwarded with a final recommendation to the IUCr Executive Committee, which makes the final decision. According to present rules, no conference will be supported in the period two months before and after an IUCr Congress. Support in the 2-3 month periods requires approval of the Chairman of the Congress Program Committee.

1992 and 1993 conferences for which support was provided or has been approved include: Direct Methods of Phasing in Macromolecular Crystallography, Panama City Beach, FL, USA; Accuracy in Powder Diffraction, Gaithersburg, MD, USA; Diffraction at High Pressure, Washington, DC, USA; 4th Int'l Conf. on Quasicrystals, St. Louis, MO, USA; School on Crystallographic Computing, Vesprem, Hungary; Gordon Research Conf. on Electron Distributions and Chemical Bonding, Plymouth State College, NH, USA; Symposium on Organic Crystal Chemistry, Poznan, Poland; European Powder Diffraction, Enschede, The Netherlands; European Crystallography Meeting 14, University of Twente, The Netherlands; ACA Meeting, Pittsburgh, PA, USA; Anomalous Scattering of X-rays and Neutrons, Hamburg, Germany; 8th Int'l Summer School on Crystal Growth, Palm Springs, CA, USA; 10th Int'l Conf. on Crystal Growth, San Diego, CA, USA; Rietveld Summer School, Cieszyn, Poland; Il Escuela Iberoamericana de Cristalografia/XIICongreso Iberoamericano de Crystalografia, Toledo and Madrid, Spain; 1st Crystallographic Conf. of the Asian Crystallographic Assn., Singapore; School on Computational Methods in X-ray Powder Diffraction, Aswan, Egypt; Workshop on Optoelectronic Materials and their Applications, LaHabana, Cuba; 4th Intensive Course in X-ray Structure Analysis of Small and Medium Sized Molecules, Aston, Birmingham, UK, and the IUCr Congress.

Applications for the Young Scientist Awards are to be directed to the Conference Organizers once support has been approved by the IUCr Executive Committee. The IUCr has not attempted to define the term "young", so if in doubt, send an application! Requests for application forms should be sent to: P. Coppens, Calendar Subcommittee Chair, Dept. of Chem., SUNY at Buffalo, 157 Acheson Hall, Buffalo, NY14214, USA. Tel.:716-831-3911, FAX: 716-831-2960, e-mail: che9990@ubvms.
