New Executive Secretary

Mike Dacombe was appointed Executive Secretary of the IUCr at its Congress in Beijing in August 1993. Mike graduated from Leeds University in 1972 with a first class honors degree in Chemistry/Earth Sciences (combined). He then joined the Information Department of the British Nonferrous Metals Research Association where he was the editor of their Abstracts Journal. In 1975 he joined the IUCr as an Editorial Assistant and in 1986 became Technical Editor. Since 1986 the activities of the IUCr editorial office have greatly diversified. Major changes include the ability to accept much material in machine-readable form [in particular, the development of procedures for handling papers submitted as Crystallographic Information Files (CIF)], the  introduction of centralized checking procedures to ensure that all numerical information related to structures reported in IUCr journals has been thoroughly checked, and the introduction of computing facilities to cope with these developments.

Peter Strickland has been appointed Managing Editor of the IUCr with overall responsibility for both the technical editing and the centralized checking, Sue King has been appointed Technical Editor, and Amanda Berry Assistant Technical Editor.
