The 2018 Annual Meeting and General Assembly of the Crystallographic Society of Japan (CrSJ2018) was held on 10-11 November at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, and about 300 crystallographers participated. The meeting featured 49 oral and 96 poster presentations covering all aspects of crystallography, three award lectures, three microsymposia, a special lecture promoting gender equality, two luncheon seminars and industrial exhibitions from 10 companies/organizations. The microsymposia were titled Application of Data Analysis by New Mathematical Methods in Crystallography, Chemical Bonding and Crystallography under High Pressure and Future Development of Protein Structural Analysis through Collaboration between Crystallography and Electron Microscopy, and a total of 15 invited talks were given.

At the CrSJ Awards Ceremony, the S. Nishikawa Award was given to Kunio Miki (Kyoto University) for his research Development of Protein Crystallography: from Structural Biology to Biological Structure Chemistry, and the two Research Awards were presented to Takuji Ikeda (AIST) for his research Powder X-ray Diffraction Analysis of Zeolites and Contribution to the Development of a Multi-purpose Pattern Fitting System and Daishuke Hashizume (RIKEN) for his research Characterization of Labile Chemical Bonds and Reaction Mechanisms based on Electron Density Distribution Analysis.

Eight young scientists were honored with Poster Awards: Y. Lee (Hokkaido University), R. Tamura (Yokohama City University), T. Kato (University of Tokyo), Y. Okamoto (Tottori University), Y. Terasawa (Waseda University), T. Tsujiguchi (Tokyo Institute of Technology), T. Sasaki (University of Tsukuba) and H. Kitahara (Tohoku University).

The Young Crystallographers Meeting 2018, a satellite meeting of CrSJ2018, was held on 9 November, also at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and 35 researchers/students participated. This meeting is held every year to provide an opportunity for young researchers and graduate students to communicate and network with each other, especially beyond the barriers between physics, chemistry and biology, in an informal environment. This year, three lectures by H. Kasai (University of Tsukuba), H. Ohtsu (Tokyo Institute of Technology) and N. Yano (Ibaraki University) were given and a banquet was held afterwards.
