Coppens receives first Harker Award

Philip Coppens, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University at Buffalo, received the first David Harker Award from the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Institute. The award, recognizing outstanding contributions to crystallography, was established in memory of David Harker, who directed the crystallography program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and who continued an active research program at Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (then the Medical Foundation of Buffalo) in a research emeritus role. Dr Coppens, IUCr president, has pioneered studies of the use of X-ray diffraction techniques to study the nature of bonding beteeen atoms in molecules and crystals.
